Chapter One: Yellowstone

The Yellowstone National Park was a place of awesome-beauty, a landscape of surreal contrasts exploding from the living rock, and shifting mountains.

The molten core of the planet burned beneath its thin surface.

The cauldron of liquid rock boiled below the mantle.

In the park, the bubbling waters, and geysers gave the tell. Catastrophe approached.

Chapter Two: Lift

The human scientists only noticed the volcanic activity when the mountains surrounding Yellowstone Park began to lift.

It took the best geologists among to figure it out, and that took years to complete.

Even then, they did not know how vast the problem was.

The volcanologists and geophysicists weighed in, a small cabal of people.

The wildlife sensed it first; the buffalo, the elk, the wolves, and the bears, they sensed the deep rumbling of the volcano, vibrations so subtle that no human being could perceive it. They sensed the change that was coming even while the finest scientific instruments showed the daily activity as occurring within a normal range.

Chapter Five: The Axis

For nearly seven hundred thousand years the pressure grew, seven hundred thousand years since the last eruption.

The pressure of gas and heat building beneath the earth, it was energy the human mind could only comprehend in the abstract.

When the cauldera blew, Earth shifted on its axis and altered its orbit around the sun.

Chapter Six: The Cloud

Thick layers of volcanic ash buried the majority of the North American continent.

Fine particles of pulverized stone, and poisonous gas rose high into the upper atmosphere, circulating around the globe. It blanketed the world, blocking out the light of the sun, plunging the earth into a prolonged night, and winter.

It was the end.

Chapter Seven: The Other Side

The eruption was a crucible, as the eruptions had always been.

Life on earth threaded the eye of the needle, most of it becoming merely another layer of clay.

Only a few thousand people would live through it.

Half of the world perished within days, and most of the rest in the year that followed.
